Blog Tour: Gates of Paradise by Melissa De La Cruz Interview

I'm super excited to be on the blog tour for Melissa De La Cruz's Gates of Paradise, the final book in the Blue Bloods series! I just finished it and oh man it was amazing! One of the best, really, it was, and I can't wait to share with you an interview with Mel!

The Interview:

1.) The Bookshelves: What was the inspiration for Gates of Paradise? How was it like writing the finale?

Mel: It was hard at first, definitely starting it was difficult, it was very emotional to let go of the Blue Bloods series -- writing it has been part of my life for almost a decade. The inspiration came from Paradise Lost, and also the finales of all the series I've loved: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings mainly. Also I was feeling London hard that year, so I set it there. Seemed appropriate.

2.) TB: What character resembles you the post and why? Was there any "you" in any of the characters?

Mel: I'm in all of them -- mostly in Sky, Mimi, Oliver I think. The three of them have parts of my life, my voice, my sense of humor. Mimi's definitely my bitchy side, Sky is my gentler nature, and Ollie has my sense of humor and sense of the absurd.

3.) TB: Tell us about that cover! How was the process to getting the cover art like? Did you love the cover?

Mel: I love it!! I have been trying to get a guy on the cover forever, so it was great to see a little of Jack's face in it finally! I love the Blue Bloods covers, they're so beautiful and romantic, Hyperion does an awesome job. Oh I think in Lost in Time you also see the male model's back, and we were sad we couldn't show his torso because he had great abs! ;)

4.) TB: A Fav 2012 YA Read. One Wish. A addicting TV show.

Mel: 2012 was all about Code Name Verity for me. One Wish is for lessening gun violence. An addictive TV show--I don't watch a lot of TV at all, basically only Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey and Girls. But I'm huge fans of the shows I do watch. I await each episode impatiently. I used to love reality TV but I really don't watch any of it anymore, I think the fakery has gotten to me.

5.) TB: Tweet Review! In 140 Words or less, tell us about Gates of Paradise!

Mel: Heartbreaking finale to the epic Blue Bloods series. Love, loss, sacrifice and secrets revealed!

6.) TB: How was the writing process like? Any tips for inspiring writers?

Mel: It was a blur - pain and then fury and then a race to the end. I outline a lot, and I figure out a lot of backstory beforehand. My tip to aspiring writers: work as hard as you can rewrite it as much as you can. when you hit a wall keep going. You'll never get better if you don't bleed on the page. Each book demands a huge chunk of your life and your soul.

7.) TB: What can you tell us about any future books? Are you excited to write them?

Mel: Yes! I'm terribly excited. My new series HEART OF DREAD, the first book FROZEN comes out Sept 17th and it is co-authored with my husband. Mike and I worked on the Blue Bloods, Wolf Pact and Witches of East End series together, and he finally gets the credit he deserves in this one. It's about a 16 year old blackjack dealer who has a deadly secret, and is trying to escape the post-apocalyptic world of an ice-covered New Vegas in search of another land, called 'the Blue". She hires a runner, a mercenary team to get her there. But can she trust him? And will be fail her? Magic, mystery, adventure, romance. It's all there in Frozen! We call it "Lord of the Rings in reverse" in that it's not the story of magic leaving the world, it's the story of magic coming back to the world, and the word of science and technology is dying.

Also I have plans for a new cycle of Blue Bloods books. It is an adult spinoff in that it will be published by my adult publisher - who publishes Witches of East End. And Oliver Hazard-Perry will be the main focus of the second cycle. The Vampires of Manhattan: new rules, new coven, new blood. :)

My other new series is tentatively titled The Court of the Last Princess, and it's a rich, fun, Blue Bloods-style soap opera. I can't talk too much about it yet. It comes out sometime in 2014.
8.) TB: What is your current YA read? How are you liking it?

Mel: I don't read a lot of YA actually. I tend to not read in my genre. I read mostly adult literary fiction or memoirs.  I think my last YA read was Looking for Alaska by John Green. It was fantastic. I'm sorry I didn't read his books earlier, but now I'm reading them all.

Thanks so much Mel for the interview! I loved reading the whole series and stop by later on the blog for a review of Gates of Paradise! :D

Waiting on Wednesday (#19) - Sever by Lauren DeStefano

Waiting on Wednesday is Hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine

Sever (The Chemical Garden, #3)
Time is running out for Rhine in this conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Chemical Garden Trilogy.

With the clock ticking until the virus takes its toll, Rhine is desperate for answers. After enduring Vaughn’s worst, Rhine finds an unlikely ally in his brother, an eccentric inventor named Reed. She takes refuge in his dilapidated house, though the people she left behind refuse to stay in the past. While Gabriel haunts Rhine’s memories, Cecily is determined to be at Rhine’s side, even if Linden’s feelings are still caught between them.

Meanwhile, Rowan’s growing involvement in an underground resistance compels Rhine to reach him before he does something that cannot be undone. But what she discovers along the way has alarming implications for her future—and about the past her parents never had the chance to explain.

In this breathtaking conclusion to Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden trilogy, everything Rhine knows to be true will be irrevocably shattered.
Why I'm Waiting For It: I am so freaking excited for this book!! *screams and dies*  I loved the whole series and everything about it. The Chemical Garden series was so captivating and intense, I can't wait to see how the series is brought to an end!! I really can't wait to see how Gabriel and Linden works out and Rowan too. Pick this series up now! :)

My Review:
Tagline:
Wow...Touching The Surface was intense and riveting! It was amazed how it enchanted me, held me at my breath, and showed me a new side of the "afterlife"! Touching The Surface was completely fresh, new, and exciting, it's a definite YA Contemporaries for sure!

Elliot is a third timer, messing up big time in the life she had before, but doesn't know why. She goes through challenges and painful delves that cause her to find the reason she's back here. I really like Elliot's character to be honest! She was keen on her goal of finding herself here, and her romance with Trevor and Oliver was unique and fresh. The delves she has to go to were really intense and I could feel her because Kimberly's writing was so lyrical. Elliot was such a great character at times, but other times I wished she had more potential to do more risks. But overall, I really liked her as a realistic fiction character. The same goes for Oliver and Trevor! I leaned more to Oliver because she was so much caring to Elliot and real. As we got to Trevor, I did understand where he was coming from, being this hard person to Elliot.

Kimberly's writing style was so lyrical and fresh, it was amazing to read something like that! Her take on the afterlife was so cool and exciting..I never actually read anything like it or heard about it! She always kept the pace up even with some slow parts, but still was good!  Also, the chapter titles where also so cool to read and the cover is pure awesomeness!

The ending.

Overall, Touching The Surface was a really good book! I loved it a lot and it was  heart-breaking, intense, and riveting. I really can't wait to see what Kimberly Sabatini has next   in story! Pick this one up if you love lyrical writing, needing something fresh to read, or loves contemporaries :)

Hilarious and Modern Robin Hood: Pretty Crooked - Elisa Ludwig

Pretty Crooked (Pretty Crooked, #1)Pretty Crooked by Elisa Ludwig
Date Released: March 13th 2012
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Pages:  368 pages
Format: E - Book
Source: Library
Rating: Loved It
Series: (Pretty Crooked #1)

Goodreads Synopsis:  Willa’s secret plan seems all too simple: take from the rich kids at Valley Prep and give to the poor ones.

Yet Willa’s turn as Robin Hood at her ultra-exclusive high school is anything but. Bilking her “friends”-known to everyone as the Glitterati-without them suspecting a thing, is far from easy. Learning how to pick pockets and break into lockers is as difficult as she’d thought it’d be. Delivering care packages to the scholarship girls, who are ostracized just for being from the “wrong” side of town, is way more fun than she’d expected.

The complication Willa didn’t expect, though, is Aidan Murphy, Valley Prep’s most notorious (and gorgeous) ace-degenerate. His mere existence is distracting Willa from what matters most to her-evening the social playing field between the have and have-nots. There’s no time for crushes and flirting with boys, especially conceited and obnoxious trust-funders like Aidan.

But when the cops start investigating the string of burglaries at Valley Prep and the Glitterati begin to seek revenge, could he wind up being the person that Willa trusts most?

From Goodreads

My Review:
Tagline: "Could Willa pull of being her 'Robin Hood' in her rich, luxurious town of Valley Prep when all eyes are set on you?"

Where do I even begin with this one?! Pretty Crooked was dazzling, hilarious, and pure fun read! It had everything in a great contemporary, Willa; a super relatable character, and romance, I loved it so much! It was hints of Mean Girls + Gossip Girl = Makes Pretty Crooked. If you like one of the shows/movies above definitely pick Pretty Crooked now!

Instantly, since page one I was hooked, no doubt! Willa was so relatable, spunky, and quirky! She set the tone for how the book and there wasn't a time I didn't hated her, except for a few choices she did. When she and her mom moves to Valley Prep, a rich
boarding school, she instantly notices all the rich kids with the clothes, wealth, and status. It was definitely an people she can't compete with but instantly she is picked up by the world of the Glitterati. The real stealing doesn't happen towards the middle and by then we get a sense of what Willa has to go through with school and what her mom is secretly meeting with. Willa was so fun to read with!!!

The characters were so fun to read with! Willa meets two guys, Tre and Aiden, both who help her throughout the whole book. What I liked about the plot, was that both Tre and Aiden weren't the stars of the show and wasn't insta loved fueled. But the Glitterati really makes sense of the plot. Nikki, Kellie, and Cherise where really intense on Willa! They owned a blog, called ValleyBuzz where they would slam people on whatever stupid choices they made and even though we didn't see who owned it, its pretty clear they do.

The whole stealing concept was pretty good I had to say! Willa decided she had enough of the scholarship girls getting judged for the clothes they wore, she learned some skill for stealing. Even though I hate stealing, Willa doing was really made me wonder a lot. Does a new piece from Neiman Marcus really make you look better? She would then buy the clothes, knock on the door leaving the package outside with a note, and leave. Willa kept the statisfaction for herself, till everyone notices someone is stealing. I loved when all of this happened so much! It was so cool and kept me reading. :))

Overall, if you love does good gossip stories, tons of laughs, and a spunky heronine, pick Pretty Crooked soon! It's definitely one of the best books I read this year and I sooo can't wait to pick up Pretty Sly coming out this year in March 12!

Waiting On Wednesday (#19) - Born Of Illusion by Teri Brown

Waiting on Wednesday is Hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine

Born Of Illusion
Anna Van Housen is thirteen the first time she breaks her mother out of jail. By sixteen she’s street smart and savvy, assisting her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, and easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums and mentalists in 1920’s New York City. Handcuffs and sleight of hand illusions have never been much of a challenge for Anna. The real trick is keeping her true gifts secret from her opportunistic mother, who will stop at nothing to gain her ambition of becoming the most famous medium who ever lived. But when a strange, serious young man moves into the flat downstairs, introducing her to a secret society that studies people with gifts like hers, he threatens to reveal the secrets Anna has fought so hard to keep, forcing her to face the truth about her past. Could the stories her mother has told her really be true? Could she really be the illegitimate daughter of the greatest magician of all?

Born of Illusion is the first book in a new series. Each book in the series will introduce a new historical figure, whose legend is shrouded in magic, along with the young woman whose fate is irrevocably tied to his. The through line in each of the books will be The Ghost Club, the real life secret society that was founded in 1862 by the likes of Charles Dickens, Sir Conan Doyle, and W. B. Yeats to advance mankind’s knowledge of the paranormal. The first three books in the series will deal with Houdini, Aleister Crowley and Rasputin.
Why I'm Waiting For It: First, off I love the cover a lot! It looks so odd and quickly I easily could grab this without even looking at the synopsis! This one hasn't really been getting much rave or even been on any WoW's I saw. I really hope they have this on Netgalley soon!

Born of Illusion by Teri Brown will be released on June 11, 2013 by Balzer and Bray

All Out Pixie Apocalypse: Endure - Carrie Jones

Endure (Need, #4)Endure by Carrie Jones
Date Released: May 8th 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
Pages: 272 pages
Format: Hardcover
Source: Library
Rating: LOVED
Series: Need #4

Goodreads Synopsis:  It’s all-out war (and no-holds-barred romance) in the climactic conclusion to Carrie Jones’s bestselling series.

Zara is at the center of an impending apocalypse. True, she’s successfully rescued Nick from Valhalla, but it simply isn’t enough. Evil pixies are ravaging Bedford, and they need much more than one great warrior; they need an army. Zara isn’t sure what her role is anymore. She’s not just fighting for her friends; she’s also a pixie queen. And to align her team of pixies with the humans she loves will be one of her greatest battles yet. Especially since she can’t even reconcile her growing feelings for her pixie king . . .

Unexpected turns, surprising revelations, and one utterly satisfying romantic finale make Endure a thrilling end to this series of bestsellers.

From Goodreads

My Review:
Where do I begin with this? It was totally epic and amazing! Carrie Jones is fearless in writing the last book in the Need series and I'm so sad that its finally ending! Despite it being short, it was full on a fast paced, plot driven novel with romance not as a main theme. I'll definitely miss all these characters!

Endure picks off right where Entice left off, Nick returns from Valhalla and Zara isn't sure if he has the same feelings for her and she is Astley's queen. One of the best aspects of this book was the plot. Carrie Jones kicks it up a notch and goes all out with Zara's spunkiness and full blown personality! Telling what happens here would give away a lot, so Endure is more of a read it for yourself type of book. One thing about the plot is Zara choices kills the reader, literally. In addition, the pixies flow with the book and everything leading up to Endure makes sense now. Plus Carrie Jones makes Zara and Issie full of laughs and humor!

Not a love driven story! Yes, that's right! Endure doesn't head to the direction of a love paranormal type of book. *wipes sweat* If you first picked up Need you got instantly a love romance book..but it turns to be more when you stay with the books, which I did and never regret! Zara and Issie were loads of fun in this book! We say a side to Issie we never saw, and I give her props for bravery! Nick was really a jerk in this one, but I get where he's coming from and he gets better as the book goes on. Astley was also amazing in this one to Zara but you discover his true motives later on and it's not that happy.

Overall, Endure was a wonderful conclusion to the Need series. It had everything Carrie Jones carried throughout all her novels, with humor, touch of romance, and the ending could have been better, just saying. I LOVED Endure and I hope Carries Jones writes a new book this year, please!

Follower Friday is Hosted @ Parajunkee

Today's Question: IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE SUPERNATURAL BEING/CREATURE TO REALLY EXISTS WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? EX. FAE { SUBMITTED BY @SEEINGNIGHT }
My Answer: I really like this week's question! I would love to be a werewolf! It so cool to change from human to this beast in a second, and you get all these abilities to sense danger, smell scents faster, and run fast. ooh but a zombie would be a cool idea also. I'll have to go to shapeshifter for this one! I mean they can practically turn into any paranormal creature.
